Last week, PTP proudly hosted our first AWS Partner-led DeepRacer event at The Hive in Norwood, MA. What started as an 11:30 AM workshop quickly turned into a packed house with eager DevOps engineers arriving as early as 10:45 AM. The AWS DeepRacer League is growing fast, and this event offered a hands-on experience in machine learning and reinforcement learning—culminating in real-time racing of DeepRacer cars.
After a quick introduction from the PTP team, Jillian Forde, a Solutions Architect with AWS, kicked things off with a deep dive into AWS SageMaker. Attendees learned how to build learning modules and train machine learning models to control their cars. Teams of four were then formed to collaborate on model development and optimization.
Throughout the afternoon, teams had about three hours to build and refine their models. Thanks to support from the AWS Pit Crew—including Jon Myer, Nick Wislett, and Neal Mcfee—teams could transfer models to the cars, manage car speed via tablets, and test their builds on the track.
At 3:30 PM, model development wrapped, and the racing began. Each team had 4 minutes to set their fastest lap. Team Cloud set an unbeatable lap time early, with S-Car-Go finishing a close second. Medals were awarded to the top three teams, and everyone walked away with lessons learned—particularly the importance of time in training your model.
We’ve had several companies reach out asking if we can bring this AWS DeepRacer experience to their teams. The answer is yes—but you’ll need a space of about 30′ x 20′ for the track. If you’re interested in building your internal DevOps or cloud capabilities through this hands-on learning event, we’d love to partner with you.
Thanks to our AWS consulting team for their support in making this event a success. We look forward to future opportunities to help teams develop their DevOps skills and drive innovation across the cloud.
